Week 3

Hello Families!

What a week! I spent last weekend at a stay-cation in Scottsdale with my book club. It was a lovely weekend with friends spent eating yummy food, relaxing, and talking about books! Such a fun end to the first week of school.

A Note About Birthdays
We will be celebrating birthdays on the last Friday of the month. So we will spend the last few minutes of class on August 30 celebrating the August babies! Feel free to send in a treat for the class if you wish, however please refrain from sending in sugary treats- and please remember no nuts as we do have a nut allergy. Non-food treats are welcome too, such as pencils, stickers, or erasers just to name a few.

Lessons
Grammar/Writing: On Monday we will have a test on classifying and diagramming a simple sentence. We will review adverbs and adjectives.

History: We will continue our unit on Rome. We will begin the process of memorizing European countries and students will have a chance to create their own country- complete with laws and a flag they design.

Literature: We will continue reading The Princess and the Goblin. Students will begin writing a 3-5 sentence chapter summary at the completion of each chapter.

Math: We will continue learning about factors, with a test on Wednesday. Then we will move into a unit on multiples. This past week students started Khan Academy, which takes the place of math groups in fourth grade. Your child should bring home a laminated strip with their Khan Academy log in information should they wish to login at home for extra practice.

Poetry: Students will recite the poem "Humanity" by Elma Stuckey this week.

Greek and Latin Roots: This week, we will have a review check on the four roots learned this past week. We will learn 4 new roots.  I have added a roots page on this blog, so you will be able to utilize that to help your student study if you wish.

Science: There will be a science quiz Tuesday. We will spend time reviewing this previous unit, ending with a unit test on Friday.

Spalding: Students will learn 10 words Monday, and will test on these 10 words on Friday. This week we will begin to set up our Spalding notebooks.

Important Dates
  • Monday: Begin "Humanity" recitations, Classifying and Diagramming Simple Sentences Test
  • Tuesday: Science quiz
  • Friday: Spalding Test, Science Test
